The Pregnancy Pact

I know, I know, Lifetime movies are a little cheesy and extra chick-flicky but ya gotta love them! :) I was watching the latest "Lifetimer" as we call them at my house called The Pregnancy Pact. It is based on a true story about a bunch of 15 and 16 year old girls at a small conservative high school getting pregnant on purpose. a group of 5 or 6 girls all get together and think it would be a lot of "fun" to all have babies. At first no one caught on but by the time the small high school had 18 pregnant teens, people begin to think something is not right. It ended up being a huge news story and everyone found out that the girls did this on purpose.
The reason I wanted to write about this for our class is because the main reason these girls did it is because society was telling them that the best they could hope for is a husband and a child. The one girl was asked why she did it and why she didn't plan to go to college and she said that all she needed to be happy was her boyfriend and children. She acted as though to say "college? me? a girl? whats that?" These girls really thought that having babies was what they were supposed to do. This makes me sick. Instead of giving seminars on safe sex or options after high school, their school opened an in-school daycare center. Why is society and media sending these wrong messages? 18 girls in one school...that's sick.

  1. I watched this movie too!! I love lifetime movies, my roomies and I like to sit home all Sunday and watch them all day, haha. Anyway, I really liked this movie, but the part that stood out to me was when the school nurse was talking to the principal because she wanted to have a sex seminar and teach the kids how to use condoms and have safe sex. The principal got mad at her and told her absolutely not. He said that the school would not promote sex and that they would only promote abstinence. I thought this was an extremely dumb idea. I went to a Catholic high school and my school had the same policy. We were NEVER shown how to use a condom or even talked about safe sex, because my school was only allowed to promote abstinence...but guess what...NOT ALL HIGH SCHOOL KIDS ARE ABSTINENT! **not even CATHOLIC ones! So then when girls in my school got pregnant they had to accept it because not only did they not provide us with no means of safe sex, but they were avid believers in Pro-Life. I feel like that is why the school in the movie opened the day care center for the teen moms. In a way they were partially responsible for giving them the best information.

  2. I heard about this movie and I had the same reaction to it. Although over the years women have taken on a new role in society in the education area, there is still that harmful stereotype that women are meant to be mothers and caretakers. I think that it is disgusting and sad that there are still young girls who actually believe that this is what they are meant to do. Where do they learn this? The media, of course. Movies, advertisements and TV shows portray sex as a typical thing that all girls should do to make them "women," so these girls think that they need to have sex or in this case, have a baby to be considered a mature woman. Also, I think opening a day care is completely wrong! It is basically saying that having a baby in high school and not going to college is okay. This is just going to encourage girls to continue making this mistake instead of teaching them that they can do so much with their lives before they have kids. My best friend is having a baby next month. This was not planned, it was an accident and I can just see how her life is going to change and her youth is ruined. How could these girls actually CHOOSE to take this path?? It boggles my mind.

  3. I saw a preview for this movie about a week ago and decided that it was completely absurd...so obviously I decided to watch it. I was so angry when I was watching it because it didn't do a good job of discussing the options a pregnant girl has. Since all of these girls made a pact to get pregnant together, they obviously kept their babies. The storyline didn't necessarily have to talk about abortion (since it is a highly debated topic), but it would have been nice to at least see someone consider giving their baby up for adoption. There was a scene where about four girls who were 15 were getting drunk while pregnant...not one of them seemed mature enough to raise a baby.

Like Robert, I also went to a catholic school. We were also only taught to abstain from sex. As a result, I graduated with way more people who now have kids in comparison to my friends from public schools. Although this movie is kind of a stretch and seems ridiculous at times, it does have a message that I agree with. It shows us that it is important to inform high school students about safe sex. Having 18 girls in one school pregnant clearly means that the school is doing something wrong.
